Chevrolet is a make of automobile produced by the General Motors Company. In the 1920s, the Chevrolet series 490 auto was placed in direct competition with Ford’s Model T. Almost a century later, Chevrolet is still GM’s best-selling car.

The first Chevrolet Avalanche was launched as a 2002 model. This model introduced the next front fascia design that would become GM’s trademark. It had a full-length medal strip that split the grill, with GM’s golden bow-tie symbol in the center.

The Avalanche is the best possible mix of SUV and pick-up. It has a four-door crew cab configuration, with the separate cab and bed of the standard pickup. The flexible midgate design allows the rear seats to be folded, changing the Avalanche from a six-passenger SUV to a pick-up with seating for three and an eight foot cargo box. Even long-time pick-up owners have found the cab roomy enough.

GM’s Avalanche safety equipment includes stability control and anti-lock disc brakes. In crash tests, the Avalanche received the highest five-star rating for all front and side impact crashes. In 2009, the auto’s rearview camera comes as a stand-alone feature and can now be used without the addition of a navigation system.

Even the basic Avalanche comes equipped with such standards as power windows with heat, power door locks, power mirror, automatic transmission and remote keyless entry. Its V8 engine has power, with plenty of pick up from 0 to 50, yet it gives a comfortable, smooth ride. The Avalanche comes with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Gas prices have risen steadily over the past few years. The Avalanche is capable of running on E85 ethanol made from grown biomaterial and grains. Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline, is cheaper and can reduce our dependency on foreign oil. This fuel-conservation feature makes GM’s Avalanche the leader of the pack in its category.

Consumer Reports picked the Chevrolet Avalanche as Top Pick honoree among all other pick-ups. The Avalanche was the only domestic car chosen for Consumer Reports’ Top Picks.
