If you're looking for a 4x4 with rugged appeal for your off-road experience, the Chevy C/K 2500 is a great place to start.

This heavy-duty model is made from a 3/4 ton chassis with a towing capability of up to 10,000 pounds. Most models come with a 8.1 foot cargo bed, but you can opt for the extended cab in exchange for a 6.5 foot short bed. The extended cab is roomy enough for 2 passengers (or even 3 small ones) to ride comfortably. Be aware, however that the extended cab does not include rear doors like many similar models.

One of the best features of the C/K 2500 is its acceleration, which is well above average for a truck of its size. You won't be chugging up a hill waiting for it to kick into gear, and this extra punch makes it well suited for adventurous off-roading. However, the trade-off here is definitely in fuel economy, which as with most trucks, leaves something to be desired. You have 3 V8 options to choose from: the base 5.7-liter, an upgrade to 7.4-liter, or a 6.5-liter turbo-diesel. Each can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

The 4WD mode on this model, GM's part-time InstaTrac system, allows for quick shifts but was not made for use on dry pavement. Again, this model is designed for heavy-duty off-road use. Both the C and K come with 4-wheel antilock brakes, and models can be found with dual rear wheels.

And now one of the most important characteristics: the ride. If you want to feel as if you're riding on air, never feeling a bump, this is not the truck for you. On-road, this model has a decent ride that won't leave you needing a chiropractor, but is nothing to write home about. Off-road, the ride is much more exciting, allowing you to really get the full thrill of the off-road experience - bumping and tossing around, and a lot of fun to drive.

The C/K 2500 definitely runs double-duty, from serious towing capacity, to a roomy cab, to a fantastic off-roading vehicle. With all the options for customization, the best place bet for finding the exact model you want is not in a dealer's lot but online - I'd recommending starting with eBay.
