4×4 Chevy Trailblazer

The Chevy Trailblazer was intended to be an upscale version of the Chevrolet Blazer, and both models were sold side by side until 2005. Every model of the Chevrolet Trailblazer had a 4x4 option, and was one of the few on the market at the time that had the traditional 4H and 4L gearbox. The SS was an exception, as it came with a true all wheel drive system as an option. Although an excellent people hauler that is capable of running the quarter mile in under 14 seconds, its performance brakes and suspension are probably not worth the extra cost to someone who is intending to convert it to use as a true offroader.

Not that having a need for the more base models is a bad thing. With a base inline six that puts out over 290 hp, this big luxury cruiser can be converted into one heck of a rock climber. The EXT version, which was both taller and longer, can handle seven passengers with its three rows of seating. As these were built at a separate factory that closed in 2006, the last EXT was produced a few years before the last regular length Trailblazer, which ended production in 2008 when its factory closed its doors as well. All Trailblazers had the option of a locking rear differential, with the exception of the SS that came with a limited slip.
Although not terribly responsive, this truck has an almost old school feel to it that will make those who have modified older Chevys feel very at home. Having only had a seven year run, a jacked up Trailblazer will be sure to at least get a “what the heck is that” reaction at any auto show – and not in a condescending sort of way like if you had chosen to put a four inch lift on a Hyundai Accent or something. Fun as that reaction may be, it will cost you. The truck itself will not be terribly expensive, but many parts will have to be custom made. Such is the price of being unique, though, and at least the powertrain is pretty standard Chevrolet fare.
eBay shows well over a hundred different Trailblazers for sale with prices ranging from just under $10,000 to over $30,000 for a decked out 2009 SS model. There are even a few damaged examples for cheap that may be just what you need to get your new 4x4 project started on the cheap.
